Corporate Counsel

Overview: Madewell seeks an experienced attorney to assist with a variety of legal matters arising in a global retail environment with a focus on IP, commercial contracts, consumer protection, privacy matters and trade compliance issues. This person will work under the supervision of the General Counsel, advising on a diverse and challenging array of matters affecting the company. 



Specific duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Negotiate, draft and review high volume of contracts including service, marketing/PR, media, influencer, licensing, consulting and other business agreements.
  • Advise on promotional, marketing and advertising matters, including review of material for compliance with all applicable laws and requirements.
  • Provide advice and counsel regarding copyright, trademark, right of publicity and domain name issues.
  • Help support global data privacy needs of the Company, working closely with IT, Marketing, Retail, Legal and Service Excellence Center teams.
  • Partner with business units to integrate privacy/legal requirements into business planning.
  • Help manage commercial litigation and claims matters, including consumer protection and product safety matters.
  • Conduct legal research, analysis and benchmarking as needed.  
  • Help develop and implement new processes, policies and training as needed, based on legal and regulatory requirements, industry standards and best practices.
  • Use sound judgment in balancing legal risk against business needs and goals.
  • Provide strategic, creative and effective legal and business advice.
  • Work collaboratively with Legal team and business clients.
  • Other duties as assigned. 



  • J.D. degree from an A.B.A. accredited law school. Admitted and member in good standing with the New York bar (or ability to waive in to become a member).
  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant legal experience, with a combination of law firm and in-house.
  • Well-developed analytical and critical thinking skills; high attention to detail.
  • Excellent judgment and the highest level of personal integrity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to balance multiple projects while remaining highly organized. 
  • Deadline driven and able to work effectively under pressure.
  • Creative problem solver who is able to deliver clear, strategic advice to clients in a timely manner. 
  • Task-oriented with excellent sense of prioritization.
  • Self-starter who is resourceful and able to work effectively both independently, as well as with teams. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; team player who is flexible and adaptable. 
  • Proficient with technology including with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Ability to be present and work full time at the company’s designated office location.
